We have reached that time of the season, when it’s time for the big boys to the enter greatest cup competition in the world of club football. That’s right its the 3rd round draw of the Fa Cup.
We have already seen some shocks in the competition with Salford City F.C knocking out Notts County, the oldest club in the world currently playing at professional level. In the 1st round.
Whitehawk F.C are also in the hat after defeating Lincoln City in the 1st round then earning a draw against Dagenham & Redbridge thanks to a dramatic late goal.
Lets take a look the five standout ties of the 3rd round.
Leeds United v Rotherham United
The first game I have picked is Leeds against Rotherham, this is a tie that pits two teams that are currently struggling in the Championship against each other.
The reason why this is a standout tie for me is that is sees Leeds manager Steve Evans coming up against his previous employers in Rotherham.
Evans left Rotherham towards the end of September, having led them from League Two to the Championship with successive promotions and then kept them in the Championship. Having kept Rotherham up, he famously wore a sombrero, shorts and sandals when they faced Leeds at Elland Road on the final day of last season.
Less than six months later and he would end up as manager of Leeds United and preparing his side for this Fa Cup 3rd round tie against his former employers.
Salford City F.C/Hartlepool United v Derby County
One of the highlights of the Fa Cup so far this year has been the progression of Salford City, who are part owned by five members of Manchester United’s famous Class of 92. Currently in the seventh tier of English football. They reached the first round of the competition for the first time this year.
So far in their two games in the first and second rounds, they have faced League Two opponents and on both occasions you wouldn’t be able tell they were playing against teams several leagues higher than them.
If they are to play in third round tie against Derby County, they first need to overcome Hartlepool in the replay. Who will surely want to play a lot better than they did in the first game.
