We have reached the end of the group stages of this seasons Champions League. We now who are the last sixteen teams that will be competing for a place in the final. That final will be play at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, the home of both AC Milan and Internazionale. And will take place on Saturday 28 May 2016. Who are the remaining sixteen teams in with a chance of being in Milan for the final.
Let’s take a look at how Groups E to H played out over the six group games.
FC Barcelona begun the defence of their Champions League in group e, along with AS Roma, Bayer Leverkusen and Bate Borisov. The opening group games saw Roma and Barcelona drawing 1-1 in Rome, while Leverkusen defeated Bate 4-1. After a slow start Barcelona took control the group and beat Roma 6-1 at the Nou Camp on matchday five.
The other three teams in the group were fighting it out for second place in the group. Both games finished as draws on the final matchday. Meaning Roma took second place in the group based on their results against Leverkusen as they finished level on points. Leverkusen take third place a Europa League spot.
When this the groups were drawn, many expected Bayern Munich and Arsenal to stroll through this group against Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb. Bayern Munich did winning 5 out of 6 games, scoring 19 goals and conceding only 3. The only defeat for Bayern came against Arsenal in London.
Arsenal went into their final game in Greece needing to beat Olympiacos and they did 3-0 to book their place in the next round. The defeat for the Greek side meant that they had to settle for a place in the Europa League.
Group G saw Chelsea drawn with Porto, Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Chelsea would eventually come out on top in a group that went into the final matchday with a number of different permutations of how the top two in the group would look.
Chelsea and Porto played each other at Stamford Bridge and both went into the game on 10 points. With Kiev sitting on 8 points knowing a win for them and a win for either Chelsea or Porto and they would make through. Chelsea were confirmed as group winners with a 2-0 win over Porto. While a 1-0 win Kiev over Tel-Aviv saw Kiev join Chelsea in the last sixteen. Leaving Porto having to settle for a place in the Europa League.
The final group sees FC Zenit of Russia qualifying ahead of KAA Gent of Belgium. Zenit won their first five games to confirm themselves as group winners. Suffering a 2-1 defeat to Gent in the final group game that confirmed the Belgium’s would be joining Zenit in the next round.
Valencia and Lyon were the other two teams in the group and will be disappointed with their showing. I’ sure they believed they would have every chance of reaching the knockout stages when the group was drawn.
Lyon didn’t manage to get a win until the final game with a 2-0 win over Valencia. Valencia finished third in the group and will have to make do with the Europa League.
