There are some exiting games for the whole of football to look forward to, its a shame we have to wait until February for these ties.
KAA Gent v VFL Wolfsburg
The first tie sees Gent of Belgium against German side Wolfsburg. Wolfsburg won the group that contained PSV, Manchester United and CSKA Moscow. Whilst Gent finished second to Zenit St Petersburg in a group that also contained Valencia and Lyon.
Gent are in the knockout stages for the first time. In fact they have been in the Champions League once before, that was in 2010/11 when they were knocked out in the third qualifying round.
Like Gent Wolfsburg are in the knockout stages for the first time and it always only there second time in the Champions League. Their first attempt at the competition ended in the group stages in the 2009/10 season.
Both sides will be looking on this as a perfect opportunity to make it through to the last eight and be amongst the elite of European football.
Roma v Real Madrid
Having finished second in the group stages to Barcelona, Roma have now been drawn against the other Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Real Madrid edged out French side PSG in their group to finish top and earn this against Roma.
This is the fifth time that Roma have reached the round of sixteen, they have twice made it through this stage and reached the quarter finals in the Champions League era.
The round of sixteen is common place Real Madrid, having reached at least the semi-finals in the last five seasons. Winning the competition in 2013/14 season. Real Madrid will be looking to make it three successive winners from Spain, with Barcelona winning the competition last season.
Paris St Germain v Chelsea
The third tie pits PSG against Chelsea, the two sides met at the same stage last season. With PSG winning through on that occasion. Chelsea topped their group ahead of Dynamo Kiev, While PSG finished runners-up to Real Madrid.
PSG will be looking to make it through to the quarter-finals for the fourth consecutive year. While of course Chelsea will be looking to reverse the result from last season and return to the quarter-final stage once again.
Both teams have contrasting seasons in their leagues, with PSG flying at the top of the French league, while Chelsea have struggled in their defence of the Premier League title. Winning the Champions League may Chelsea’s best hope of being in the competition next season.
