Arsene Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal football club for over twenty years, in that time hey haven’t finished any lower than 4th in the Premier League but he has only managed three Premier League titles.
Can Wenger guide his team to another Premier League title?
I am not an Arsenal fan but every season I look at Arsenal and I never believe they will win the league while Mr Wenger is the manager of Arsenal football club. They may be in the top four all season season in season out but I never look at Arsenal and think they are serious challengers for the Premier League title.
Last night they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Watford and missed an opportunity to close the gap on Chelsea at the top of the table ahead of their meeting at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Even if Arsenal had beaten Watford and then beaten Chelsea on Saturday and reduced the gap between themselves and Chelsea to four point I still wouldn’t be convinced that they were serious contenders to lift the Premier League come the end of the season.
The three title winning campaigns were built on the famous Arsenal defence that was built by George Graham. He added players to the those team that enabled them to win the Premier League but has failed to replace the majority of these players since their last title success at the end of the 2003/04 season.
The current Arsenal squad probably has some of the best attacking players in the Premier League but they don’t possess any players that will stop the opposition playing. They don’t have home grown players in their squad who understand what means to the Arsenal fans they suffer defeats like last night. Ok they have players in their squad who have come through the youth ranks at the club but these are players that have been brought in from other countries.
There is no guarantee that Arsenal will mount a serious challenge for the title should they replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager. Having said if I was an Arsenal fan I would want the board to take that risk. If they keep handing Wenger new contracts until he decides its time to step away and Arsenal will probably keep finishing in the top four and playing Champions League season after season but will they be serious contenders to win a fourth Premier League title or even become a serious contender to become Champions of Europe.
